These are made by flame working with a tempered scientific borosilicate glass strong as the Pyrex you use to bake with in your kitchen or if you remember the glass you used in chemistry class to make concoctions over your Bunsen burners.
There really is no (right way up) to use these -They are completely double sided and reversible. Depends on your drink and what you are using it for.. I typically use it colored side up because I love how pretty it makes my drinks look and use the bottom round part as a muddler, but many people love to reverse it and use them for mixing with the colored end down
